Heritage in Mayo
Addergoole Titanic Society
In April 1912 fourteen men and women from Addergoole, in North Mayo, set sail from Queenstown, Cork for a new life in America. Within days, eleven had died in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. Their ship, Titanic, sank on her maiden voyage. Rural Ireland resounds with tales of emigration, steeped in the traditions of letting go.The small parish of Addergoole in Mayo will never let go of the memory of those fourteen neighbours and friends, eleven of whom perished with that "Ship of Dreams".
The Jackie Clarke Collection
The Jackie Clarke Collection is located in the heart of Ballina. It is the single most important private collection of Irish history material in public hands. The Collection comprising over 100,000 items spanning 400 years contains an eclectic mixture of artefacts, proclamations, posters, political cartoons, rare books, pamphlets, handbills associated with Theobald Wolfe Tone, letters from Michael Collins, Douglas Hyde, Michael Davitt and O’Donovan Rossa. It also contains works by Sir John Lavery, maps, hunger strike material and personal items from Leaders of the 1916 Rising.
Céide Fields
The remarkable neolithic site at Céide Fields in County Mayo, Ireland, contains the oldest known stone-walled fields in the world – dating back nearly 6,000 years. Céide Fields overlooks the mighty Atlantic Ocean which gently laps (or vigorously pounds …. depending on the weather!) up against the cliffs below. The landscape itself has been forged from the dramatic upheaval and movement of the earths crust over millions of years.
Foxford Wollen Mills
Over a century ago, Mother Agnes, the founder of the mill, stood on a bridge in the small Irish village of Foxford and contemplated a future with community and craftsmanship at its core. 130 years later, the people of Foxford are the beating heart of our mill. From design to warp to loom, the stories that make up the present are woven through their past. Foxford Woollen Mills is situated in the picturesque small town of Foxford, County Mayo which is nestled alongside the majestic flow of the mighty River Moy and the magnificent peaks of the Ox and Nephin Mountains.
